Black Friday on Amazon isn't one day anymore. It's weeks of early deals, a full Black Friday Week that has started about a week before Thanksgiving in recent years, and Cyber Monday right behind it. The goal isn't to catch every sale. It's knowing which purchases to lock in now and which ones are worth the wait.
Buy Early
- The gift everyone wants this year. Popular toys and trending gifts tend to sell out before their prices ever drop, and an "out of stock" button doesn't come with a discount.
- Anything you need before Thanksgiving. Serving pieces, a roasting pan, or fresh bedding for the guest room aren't worth saving a little on if they show up after your guests do.
- Items already at their lowest price. If a price tracker shows something is at or near its low, waiting rarely gets you a better deal.
- Personalized and custom gifts. They take time to make, and they usually can't be returned, so order them while there's still room on the calendar.
Wait On
- Big-ticket electronics and Amazon's own devices. These have historically seen some of their deepest discounts during the main Black Friday event.
- Small kitchen appliances, beauty gift sets, and holiday bundles. They're popular deal categories, so you'll usually have plenty of choice once the sale starts.
- Coats, boots, and winter clothes. Markdowns tend to get deeper as the season goes on.
- Anything without a deadline. If you don't need it by a certain date, you have the time to wait for a better price.
How to Play It
- Build your list now. Save everything you're considering to an Amazon list so you can spot price drops at a glance instead of searching for each item again.
- Set a budget per person before the deals start. It's much easier to stick to a number you chose on a calm Tuesday than one you're deciding at midnight.
- Check the Today's Deals page every few days in November, and know how Lightning Deals work before the big week, since the best ones sell out fast.
- Look at the return-by date on your order. In recent years, Amazon has extended its return window for most items bought in November and December into late January, but confirm it on your order before you count on it.
- Don't expect a refund of the difference. Amazon generally doesn't adjust the price if an item gets cheaper after you buy it, so if something big is likely to drop, waiting is the smarter move.
Black Friday rewards a plan more than speed. Buy early what you can't risk missing, wait on what you can, and let your list do the remembering for you.
