The Fall Shoe Switch: What Comes Out, What Gets Stored & What Needs Replacing

Three boxes, thirty minutes, and a closet that finally makes sense again.

Every year I tell myself I'll do this gradually, swap a pair here and there as the weather turns, and every year it ends up being one Saturday afternoon and three cardboard boxes on the closet floor. Sandals in one, summer flats in another, the "these didn't survive the season" pile in a third. It's not glamorous, but it's the difference between a closet that works for the weather you're actually having and one that's fighting you every morning.

The boots come out first, always. A pair of knee-high leather riding boots goes from the back of the shelf to the front, because they're doing the heavy lifting from October through at least January — jeans, dresses, everything. Right behind them, a pair of leather Chelsea ankle boots for the days that call for something a little less commitment and a lot more walkable.

What goes into storage matters as much as what comes out. Strappy sandals and anything white or pale get folded into a clear shoe storage box — clear so I'm not opening five boxes in April trying to remember which one has the wedges. If your closet doesn't have the shelf space to spare, a set of stackable shoe organizers gets the summer rotation off the floor and out of the way without shipping it to the basement.

Then there's the pile that's honestly just done. A worn-through sole or a suede boot that never quite recovered from last February's slush is a sign, not a inconvenience — I've learned to actually replace those instead of pretending they'll make it one more season. This is usually where a pair of suede Chelsea boots earns a spot, since suede reads dressier than leather without trying as hard.

Last box, and the one that gets used more than any of them: a rotating shoe tray by the door with a couple of canvas sneakers for errand days when boots feel like overkill.

Three boxes, thirty minutes, and a closet that actually reflects the season you're standing in — that's the whole system. No overthinking it beyond that.
