Setting a Thanksgiving Table Without Buying an Entire New Table
How I set a Thanksgiving table with what I already own: gold chargers, a linen runner, taper candles and little potted herbs do most of the work.

Every November there's a moment when I look at a styled table online and think I need new everything. New plates, new glasses, honestly a new table. I don't. Most of what makes a Thanksgiving table feel special costs less than one fancy serving platter, and the rest is already in my cabinets.
I start with what I own and stop trying to make it match. Mismatched plates in cream and terracotta look collected rather than random when they sit on gold charger plates. The chargers are the one thing I'd actually buy, because they pull every place setting into the same family.
Next comes a linen table runner down the center instead of a full tablecloth, so the wood shows through and the table feels warm instead of formal. Linen napkins in a natural oat color go loosely on each plate. No napkin rings, no folding tricks.
Light does most of the work. I mix tall taper candles in brass candlestick holders with a few small votives along the runner. For greenery, I tuck rosemary, thyme and sage in mini terracotta pots between the candles. They smell like the meal, they're low enough to talk over, and guests can take one home at the end of the night.
Last, the glasses. If yours don't match either, a few amber drinking glasses mixed in with clear ones look intentional, and they catch the candlelight beautifully.
A Thanksgiving table doesn't need to look new. It needs to look like someone was expecting you.
