The Thanksgiving Weekend Packing List

My Thanksgiving weekend packing list: one weekender, a cozy knit, a dinner-ready outfit, two pairs of shoes, and the small extras that make a long weekend away easy.

Thanksgiving weekend is the one trip all year where I need a little of everything. Something cozy for the drive, something nice for dinner, something to sleep in at someone else's house, and enough room left for the pie plate somebody always sends home with you. Four days, one bag. Here's how I make it work.

It starts with the bag. A canvas and leather weekender holds a long weekend without looking like I'm moving in, and it slides into a packed trunk without a fight. I keep a hanging toiletry bag packed and ready, so the bathroom counter at my host's house stays clear.

For clothes, I build everything around one chunky cream knit sweater and a pair of dark jeans. The sweater covers the drive, the Friday walk, and leftovers night on the couch. Add a plaid flannel shirt to layer underneath or wear open, and that's three outfits from four pieces.

The dinner outfit gets its own spot at the very top of the bag, folded so it comes out ready to wear. Shoes are the hardest part, so I stop at two pairs: leather ankle boots that dress the jeans up for dinner, and white sneakers for everything else.

Then come the small things that make a borrowed bedroom feel like mine. A silk pillowcase goes in every time, because nobody's guest-room pillows are kind to a blowout. A packing cube set keeps me from unpacking all over someone's spare bed, and it makes the Sunday repack take five minutes instead of twenty.

The goal isn't to bring less. It's to bring the right things, so the only thing I'm thinking about on Thursday is who's sitting next to me at the table.
