My Current Nail Routine: Low Maintenance, Always Polished

Here's my honest confession: I have tried everything. Hard gel. Soft gel. Dip powder. Salon every two weeks. At-home dip kits. Press-ons. And at this point in my life, I've landed on something that works for me — and it involves a lot less effort than you'd think.

The Gel Manicure Reality Check

Gel manicures look incredible. They last two to three weeks. And they are absolutely brutal on your natural nails. After a year of doing them religiously, my nails were thin, peeling, and splitting for months. I had to stop and let them recover.

If you go the salon route: go to a reputable place, don't let them over-file your nail bed, and take a break between sets. Your nails will thank you.

What I Actually Do Now

My current setup: at-home gel polish with a lamp, but only every three to four weeks, not every two. I'm willing to have slightly grown-out nails for an extra week in exchange for healthier natural nails the rest of the year.

Between gels, I keep my nails short, moisturized with cuticle oil, and if anything chips, I patch it with a similar shade or just file the edge smooth. I don't re-paint mid-cycle — it just looks worse than letting it grow out.

The Press-On Season

Press-ons have gotten genuinely good. Like, really good. For events, trips, or when you want a specific shape without committing, press-on nails from reputable brands are a legitimate option now. The adhesive strips are much stronger than they used to be, and you can get custom shapes in short, medium, and long.

My rule: press-ons for special occasions or vacations. At-home gels for everyday. Nothing for a few weeks between cycles to let nails breathe.

The Products I Always Keep

The Low Maintenance Truth

The secret to always having polished nails is lower expectations, not more effort. Short nails with a simple color beat long nails with a messy manicure every time. Keep them shaped, keep them moisturized, repaint when you have ten minutes, and don't be precious about it.

Perfect nails are a full-time commitment. “Good enough” nails are a five-minute Tuesday habit. I'll take the five minutes.
