My End-of-Summer Reset: The Things I Do Before Fall Really Starts

There’s a week where the light changes before the temperature does. Here’s how I do the end-of-summer reset the second I feel that shift.

There's a week — you know the one — where the light changes before the temperature does. Evenings get that gold, slanted quality. The pool towels stop drying by lunch. And something in you starts quietly packing up summer before you've even said you're ready.

I don't wait for September 1st to do it. I start the reset the second I feel that shift, because fall doesn't wait either.

First thing: the closet gets edited, not overhauled. I'm not buying a new wardrobe. I'm pulling the lightweight knit layers to the front and pushing the linen to the back where it can rest until June. A cedar-lined storage bin keeps the sweaters from smelling like a basement by the time I need them.

Then the kitchen. Out goes the seltzer-and-citrus era, in comes the enamel dutch oven that's basically done nothing but sit pretty since March. I restock cinnamon, restock apple cider vinegar, and I always — always — grab a fresh set of harvest-scented candles before the good ones sell out.

The last piece is the one nobody talks about: the mental reset. I sit down with a guided fall journal for fifteen minutes — not to plan my whole autumn, just to name what summer taught me before I let it go.

That's it. No deep clean, no Pinterest board come to life overnight. Just a few honest hours that make the season feel like it's arriving for me instead of just happening to me.
